Apocalypse Now Print

I was tasked with imagining the apocalypse from the POV of something non-human for my speculative fiction class. I chose a horse because of what they represent. Power, dominance, patriarchy. But this is a false image, they are kind and compassionate animals most beloved by little girls. I imagined a world a few years in the future with swirling polluted skies from a thinning ozone layer. A former domestic horse escapes home after societal collapse. Finally free, but nostalgic for the cage that provided safety and comfort. The horse always dreamed of freedom, but not like this. I grew up on the plains and watch the winters get shorter and hotter every year and worry about what the world is becoming. Apocalypse isn’t an event, but a slow unraveling that we can watch with awe and horror.
