Part of my envy series on female friendship, betrayal, and resentment. I was thinking about concealment, inner/outer beauty, and aesthetic morality. My most common nightmare is about my teeth falling out of my head. I saved yellowing the teeth for last and I was nervous about “ruining it” which made me want to do it more. I like making the girly sugary stuff unnerving, the contrast is more fun😽Women are both pressured to be self-surveilling and beautiful while being ridiculed for narcissism and vanity. Ideal feminine beauty is an artifice one must create through a great deal of blood sweat and tears, and it feels like the standard gets more extreme every year. At the same time, beauty is treated like women’s greatest source of power and it’s a moral failing to not comply in some way. This piece builds on the first in this series “Sucker!” Where I was thinking about backhanded compliments and passive aggression. This series can be read both as being about relationships between women and/or with ourselves. Envy often stems from inward insecurity and gets projected outward
